About 'brookie'

Brooke Bergan has taught creative writing for nearly twenty years (wow! has it been that long, brookie?) and has published critically acclaimed poetry, fiction, essays, translations, and a play.

Beautiful Writing—from some Talented People

This site is dedicated to the fine people who have signed up for Brooke Bergan's poetry and fiction creative writing workshop at Chicago's famed Newberry Library.

The Elements of Creative Writing meets Saturdays, 1-3 pm at the Newberry, from September 26 to November 14 (8 sessions).

According to Brooke, the course will spotlight such literary structures as suspense, conflict, figures of speech, point of view, rhyme and rhythm, setting and scene, form and structure, diction and dialog, exposition, narration, plot and theme.

"This supportive yet challenging workshop will provide weekly assignments to help writers at all levels and of every genre master the elements of creative writing. Lively class discussions of student work will give participants the chance to see the elements of creative writing in action and to receive feedback on their own work."

So far the course has been a resounding success!

But in an effort to help organize all the texts that have been submitted to the class so far, some of us thought putting together a small web site might be a help. As web master, I'll be responsible for posting assignments, putting up any special announcements having to do with the course itself (or other noteworthy items of interest to the class), and displaying works that have been submitted by our wonderful workshop participants.

Everyone who wants something added to the site should be sure to email me a digital copy of the text, and be sure your full name is included so I get the attribution correct. And of coure send me a note if you see that something is incorrect, or if you want to add, modify or delete any of your work.

Keep writing!
